Introducing The Football League

The Football League is a league competition featuring football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest such competition in world football. Since 1995 it has had 72 clubs evenly divided into three divisions, which are currently known as The Championship, League One, and League Two.

The challenge

The Football League approached the OTHER media to develop an official iPhone App for their member clubs. The challenge was to build an App that fans of the individual clubs could call their own. Each club App features its own unique design and content, thus 'belonging' to that club and it's fans.

What we did

The project involved deep third-party integration and manages almost a 1,000 data feeds for all of the clubs in a simple and efficient way. Fans have access to their club’s latest news and player profiles and have the ability to follow all their team’s matches live from their iPhone. The innovative live match centre has live text commentary, match stats, player substitutions and scores all updated live.

Fans can also follow any live match from the 7 featured competitions of the Barclays Premier League, npower Championship, npower League 1, npower League 2, Carling Cup, FA Cup, and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. A premium section is available to fans that allows them to watch the video match highlights all from their iPhone.

The results

With over 100,000 downloads in 2 weeks the results speak for themselves. The App was delivered in little more than two months becoming the number 1 top grossing App the day it was released to the Apple App store, and has seen huge fan adoption by also reaching the number 1 top free sports app.
